Project-Based Learning at iLEAD Lancaster: Cultivating Excellence through Critique and Revision

4th Grade Animal Defense POL 2.2026 iLEAD Lancaster1

At iLEAD Lancaster, we don’t just teach subjects; we prepare learners for the real world. In the professional arena, nobody “hits a home run” on the first swing. Architects refine blueprints, software engineers patch code, and surgeons practice simulations.

That’s why Critique and Revision isn’t just a step in our Project-Based Learning (PBL) process. It’s our intentional process for building resilience, excellence, and a true growth mindset.

With each project, our facilitators answer this question:

  • Critique and Revision: How will feedback and refinement be embedded in the project?

Making Excellence a Habit

At our TK-8 free public school in Lancaster, CA, we’ve moved beyond the “turn it in and forget it” model of traditional schooling. Instead, we create a safe, supportive environment where feedback is a gift, not a grievance. Our learners discover that a critique isn’t criticism of them but a roadmap for refining their work.

Our systematic approach to mastery involves three key layers:

  • Self-Reflection: Using professional rubrics, learners “become their own coach.” This builds deep ownership and the ability to self-correct before anyone else sees the work.
  • Peer Critique: Using structured protocols, learners provide feedback that is kind, specific, and helpful. This develops empathy and the communication skills needed in any modern workplace.
  • Facilitator Feedback: Our facilitators don’t just “fix” the product; they guide the thought process. They challenge learners to think bigger and push their boundaries.

Why This Matters for Your Child

When we celebrate the journey of improvement rather than just the final grade, something incredible happens: Learners stop fearing mistakes. By normalizing multiple rounds of revision, iLEAD Lancaster families can watch their children transform into confident self-starters who take genuine ownership of their education.

Whether they are building a bridge, coding an app, or composing a piece of music, they aren’t just finishing a project; they’re finding the grit to excel in whatever they do next.

Excellence is not an act, but a habit. At iLEAD Lancaster, revision becomes the bridge between good enough and truly great.
