English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC)

Summative ELPAC

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Identifying learners who need help learning English is important so they can get the support they need to do well in English language arts/literacy, mathematics, science, and other subject areas in school. The Summative English Language Proficiency Assessment for California, or “Summative ELPAC,” is the assessment used to measure how well learners understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s facilitator about the areas in which your child needs extra support.

This spring, your child will take the Summative ELPAC.

Learners in K-12 who are classified as English learners will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English. Learners are tested on their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Your child’s voice is being recorded as part of the speaking assessment. A small percentage of learner responses will be used to validate the accuracy of scoring and will not be used for identification. All recorded responses will be destroyed after the scores are validated.

The Summative ELPAC testing window is February 1 through May 31. Our school will be testing all EL learners from February 13-May 31.

You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test, you can do the following:

• Read to your child, or have them read to you on a regular basis.
• Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see, or what is happening in each picture.
• Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school.
• Talk with your child’s facilitator about your child’s listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to help support their progress.

Identificar a los estudiantes que necesitan ayuda para aprender inglés es importante para que puedan recibir el apoyo que necesitan para desempeñarse bien en lengua/literatura inglesa, matemáticas, ciencias y otras materias en la escuela. Las Evaluaciones Sumativas de Dominio del Idioma inglés para California o «ELPAC Sumativas» es el examen que se usa para determinar en qué medida los estudiantes entienden inglés cuando no es el idioma que hablan en su hogar. La información obtenida de ELPAC le brinda información al profesor de su hijo sobre las áreas en las que necesita apoyo adicional.

Los estudiantes desde jardín de infantes hasta el duodécimo grado que se determina que están aprendiendo inglés rendirán el ELPAC Sumativo cada año hasta que sean reclasificados como competentes en inglés. Se examina a los estudiantes en sus habilidades de comprensión y expresión oral, lectura y escritura. La voz de su hijo se graba como parte del examen de expresión oral. Se usará un pequeño porcentaje de las respuestas del estudiante para validar la exactitud del puntaje y no se utilizará para su identificación.
